Falling into an Active Volcano: What Really Happens

Science Fact: Why You Wouldn’t Sink in a Volcano

What would happen if you fell into an active volcano? While death is certain, the physics of it is far more complex than Hollywood suggests.

The Physics of Lava

Despite what you see in movies, you wouldn't sink. Because lava is three times as dense as water and far more viscous, a human body would hit the surface like a solid floor. Instead of a "plunge" like Gollum in The Lord of the Rings, you would remain sprawled on top.

Thermal Reality

However, the "landing" offers no escape. Molten lava is typically four times hotter than a domestic oven. Resting on this bed of liquid rock would cause an immediate thermal shock, leading to rapid combustion.

The Verdict: You don't sink; you burn on the surface.
